INTRODUCTION

The venue for training was at New Handover high school. All the other teachers from the 27 Primary and 63 Elementary schools were accommodated at New Handover High school.

Sir Julius Chan - Governor of New Ireland province

The one-week in-service training was opened by the governor of the province, Sir Julius Chan and representatives from the provincial education authority.

My opening presentation for the in-service training week was based on A Need For Change.

A Need for Change then became the in-service training theme for the week. Some parts of the presentation based on change is shown in the photos below.

TRAINING STRATEGIES

General presentations on STEM concepts, processes and skills plus information regarding the newly reformed curriculum known as Standards – Based Curriculum - SBC

A lot of factors determined the strategies applied during the one-week training. These factors include:

  • only one trainer(myself)

  • Population (around 300 plus teachers)

  • target audience were teachers from different sectors or levels of schooling (elementary, primary and high school)

  • limited resources such as syllabuses and teacher guides

  • Limited materials for the STEM challenges or activities

Strategies applied were:

  • General presentations on different areas of STEM including the Standards-Based Curriculum were provided to everyone

  • Group activities, discussions, STEM challenges were done in their groups in each sector (elementary, primary and high school)

  • Group presentation done by groups in each sector

  • Same STEM challenges or activities were given to all sectors but discussions and group presentations were based on the content, principles and processes required by each sector or level.

Below is a brief overview of the core activities captured by all the presentations done during the general sessions

  • Education Reform

  • Understanding the reformed curriculum ( Standards-Based Curriculum)

  • Understanding and making curriculum connections

  • Unpacking Big Ideas

  • Apply Backward Design Process in Planning and Programming using curriculum materials – syllabuses

  • STEM challenges

  • Building the tallest tower using playing cards

  • Building a boat that can carry more load and cost less

  • Assessment

  • Planning and Programming a STEM lesson, project, or activity

  • Problem solving using STEM practices and pedagogies such as Engineering Design Process, Computational and Systems Thinking
