STEM IN FOOD INDUSTRY

OVERVIEW

We live in a connected, global community, and students should experience a school education that reflects this reality. In other words, the curriculum, particularly curriculum that is related to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (the STEM subjects), must provide opportunities for students to explore and experience the kind of connectedness that reflects life outside of school (L. Rennie et al, 2018)

An integrated curriculum that will enable students to understand and develop new knowledge about how they can think more globally and how those real-world problems are affecting themselves and their environment. Students should think more globally and play their part in finding shared solutions to the world's urgent challenges through sustainable practices.

Mr Krisnamurti - Executive Chef (Grand Papua Hotel)

INTRODUCTION

This task is very challenging but encouraging in making STEM connections through industry professionals to bring STEM concepts out of the normal classroom situation and apply it on real-world situations. This approach encourages school industry partnership which needs to be supported.

My STEM industry partner is Mr. Agson who is a chef by profession working with the Grand Papua Hotel.

I have chosen the food industry since I love different ways how food solutions have been done. I got in touch with Mr. Agson through his immediate boss, Mr Krisnamurti who is the Executive Chef for Grand Papau hotel firstly through email and then a letter requesting for interview. Attached in the appendix is a copy of the email and request letter.

The contacts for Mr Krisnamurti were given to me by the hotel receptionist when requested. My first attempt to contact Mr. Krisnamurti through email was successful but concurrently my second option through a request letter written to him was also successful. I requesting for an interview with one of his chef who is specialized in pizza making  and also be able to explain the pizza electric oven.

During my initial conversation with Mr. Krisnamurti  I was able to inform him more of what the interview is all about and my expectations. We were also able to set an interview time and date.   

Before the interview, I was introduced to Mr. Agson by his executive chef and that is where our conversation begun.Mr.Agson is a young chef with four years of experience in the food industry, specialized in food beverages and also pizza making.  

My first day of interview with him was good. Our interview and overall conversations during interview was based on some guided interview questions prepared well before we met.

Attached in the appendix is a copy of the interview questions. Through the guided questions, Mr. Agson was able to tell me more about himself, his experience and expertise, profession and qualification,  and importantly he explained the process of pizza making and also explained the pizza electric oven product – how he makes pizzas and how he operates the electric oven. Even after the interview, a couple of more conversations was had on the phone.
